Alber BDS-40 Battery Diagnostic System

Easy to Install
Designed and optimized for UPS battery cabinets, the BDS-40 is the perfect choice. With the monitor mounted on top of the cabinet and custom cables with each connection point identified to battery, installation is quick and easy.

Easy to Configure
Each BDS-40 unit monitors all batteries in one cabinet. Two different units are available. The Base Unit is the central point where power and communication connections are made. Each additional battery cabinet in the system then uses a Plus Unit, which transfers data to the Base Unit for alarm and data storage. Each Base Unit can manage up to five Plus Units, for a total of six battery cabinets. Choose an internal network card and/or a dial-up modem as standard.

Easy to Use
Alber's BDS-40 makes hard-to-interpret data easily understandable. Programmed thresholds flag problem batteries by making bar graphs turn red, triggering alarms and distributing alerts via email as soon as abnormal conditions are detected. The report has built-in decision support that analyzes data and provides suggestions for the best cause of action.

Early Warning for Battery Problems
The BDS-40 uses a patented internal DC resistance test method that bypasses the limitations of AC based impedance testing. Like an ultrasound for a battery, Alber technology lets you "look inside" and assess the battery's true state of health. It tests the condition of each module by performing a proactive resistance test - the most reliable indicator of battery performance. Because it's important to detect deterioration at an early stage to prevent catastrophic failures when dealing with 12 volt sealed batteries, measurement technology is the most important consideration when selecting a monitor. Other battery monitors' internal ohmic readings become inconsistent as the UPS load varies because of variations in AC ripple on the battery. The Alber DC resistance test method is not affected by ripple and thus provides data that is repeatable and reflects the true condition of the battery.

Optimizing Useful Battery Life
Sealed batteries are also sensitive to temperature and float voltage settings, and battery life can be extended by optimizing these. The BDS-40 monitors these conditions and continuously provides you with information that allows for considerable cost savings by optimizing useful battery life. Instead of waiting for an inevitable failure or replacing batteries prematurely, you can continue to use your battery longer and with confidence by knowing its true condition.

Alber BDS-256XL Battery Diagnostic System

Alber BDS-40

The BDS-256XL is a modular system that can monitor virtually any UPS battery configuration. The BDS-256XL consists of a Controller, Data Collection Module, and Resistance Test Module. Interface to the BDS-256XL is done using the Alber Battery Monitor Data Manager (BMDM) software. The Battery Monitor Report Generator program creates reports from collected data.

The CM-XL8 Controller
The Controller, the brain of the system, coordinates alarms and traffic to and from the other system components. It can monitor up to eight strings of 256 cells on independent UPS's, for a total of 2048 cells per Controller. Its nonvolatile memory can hold up to a year's worth of data. The built-in power supply provides 24VAC for all components in the system.

The DCM-XL48 Data Collection Module
The Data Collection Module (DCM) is a scanning voltmeter that acquires overall voltage, cell voltage, current, and temperature readings from the monitored battery string. The DCM can monitor cells or blocks from 1V to 16VDC. The DCM compares captured data with preset thresholds and alerts the user if any parameters are in violation. Each DCM can measure up to 48 cells or battery blocks per string. DCM's can be connected in series to monitor up to 256 cells per string. The DCM also controls the load module during a resistance test.

The RTM-XLR Resistance Test Module
The Resistance Test Module (RTM) provides the load during the patented resistance test. Without this component, the monitor system could not provide the high reliability and repeatable results that Alber customers rely on.

The BDS-256 System Features
- Monitor up to 256 cells/modules per string. 2V cells, NiCd cells, 4V, 6V, 8V and 12V modules are supported.
- Overall voltage, cell/module voltages, current, and temperature are continuously scanned and compared with programmed alarm levels.
- Internal DC resistance tests are performed and compared to programmed alarm levels. All data is saved.
- Overall voltage, cell/module voltages, current, and temperature readings are saved.
- Discharges are detected and data saved. All parameters are scanned every four seconds during a discharge.
- Discharges can be viewed in real time locally or remotely during the discharge event or later replayed in real or accelerated time.
- Alarm events trigger an indicator, dedicated contact closure, programmed contact closure, and dial-out notification. All battery parameters can be set to page, fax, print, and/or sound an alarm.
- Communication via network, modem, serial or USB. Optional TCP/IP interface for network or Internet communication. Industry standard MODBUS protocol interfaces to third party, building management systems.
- No on-site computer required.
- Modular design easily expands to monitor an unlimited number of strings. When used with the MPM-100, virtually all battery configurations can be managed with one software package.
- Digital input/output option permits monitoring up to 16 inputs and up to 8 user-programmed outputs.
- Monitor Load Control option enables the monitor system to control an Alber Continuous Load Unit (CLU) for performing battery capacity testing.
- Automatically poll and retrieve data.
- Reports can be e-mailed and then viewed using the free downloadable Alber Archive Reader.
- Faulty cells detected during an unplanned discharge event can be reported in real time.
- All components are standard 19" rack mount.

Alber MPM-100 Battery Monitoring and Diagnostic System

The Alber MPM-100 configurable battery diagnostic system identifies conditions requiring further investigation, such as cell voltage, overall string voltage, current, temperature, and internal resistance. Automatic periodic tests verify the integrity of the battery being monitored, and an alarm is given for any out-of-tolerance condition.

Proactive testing includes internal ohmic resistance for the complete module at user-programmed intervals. By tracking internal resistance, the system can predict and report weak cells prior to complete failure. A time-to-go estimate algorithm, which uses discharge parameters and internal resistance readings, assists in determining remaining battery life.

The MPM battery monitor accommodates most telecom and utility battery configurations. The Battery Monitor Data Manager (BMDM) program, with its automatic polling and data transfer algorithms, lets a central computer manage over 1000 MPM systems. The battery monitor can be tied into a building management system via several protocols.

The MPM, in 19" rack mount, can be configured for most power, telecom, utility, and cellular applications. The MPM has a self-contained processing unit for stand-alone operation, and can communicate with an automatic callout system upon alarm or discharge sensing. Connection to a monitoring site may be through the internal modem, network, Modbus over TCP/IP or locally to a computer via the RS-232 port.

Alber's Cellular MPM Battery Monitor Says "No Problem!" to Remote Areas and Critical Systems.
Now battery monitoring is possible in even the most remote areas. Alber's cellular modem equipped MPM-100 takes advantage of well established cellular architecture to let you install a monitoring system virtually anywhere you have batteries. The MPM-100 is the perfect battery monitor for your central office, outside plant (OSP), wireless base station or radio base station.

During setup, simply open the MPM and insert a service activated SIM card into the modem. Close the unit, connect the antenna, then install the MPM system as instructed. A few moments after power up, the MPM establishes communication with your cellular provider and you're ready to go!

Using selections you make during setup, your Central computer will poll the MPM at the times you specify. Additionally, depending on cellular service in your area, the MPM can call out on alarm.

The Universal Xplorer Battery Monitor (UXTM) is a real time battery monitor designed for use in telecommunications or in DC powered data centers. The UXTM lets you automate the IEEE recommended practices for battery maintenance and testing. The system can monitor up to four strings in parallel.
